Malik Ambar: Power and Slavery across the Indian Ocean (The World in a Life Series)By Omar H. Ali

Part of The World in a Life series, this brief, inexpensive text provides insight into the life of slave soldier Malik Ambar. Malik Ambar: Power and Slavery across the Indian Ocean offers a rare look at an individual who began in obscurity in eastern Africa and reached the highest levels of South Asian political and military affairs in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Ambar's rise from slavery in East Africa to ruler in South Asia sheds light on the diverse mix of people, products, and practices that shaped the Indian Ocean world during the early modern period. Originally from Ethiopia--historically called Abyssinia--Ambar is best known for having defended the Deccan from being occupied by the Mughals during the first quarter of the seventeenth century. His ingenuity as a military leader, his diplomatic skills, and his land-reform policies contributed to his success in keeping the Deccan free of Mughal imperial rule.

We live in a global age where big concepts like "globalization" often tempt us to forget the personal side of the past. The titles in The World in a Life series aim to revive these meaningful lives. Each one shows us what it was like to live on a world historical stage. Brief, inexpensive, and thematic, each book can be read in a week, fit within a wide range of curricula, and shed insight into a particular place or time. Four to six short primary sources at the end of each volume sharpen the reader's view of an individual's impact on world history.

Review

"Writing in an engaging and imaginative style, Omar H. Ali does a remarkable job of reconstructing the most scholarly and accessible account yet published of this remarkable African leader. Drawing upon both previous studies of Malik Ambar and a rich trove of primary documents from Indian history, he further enhances our understanding of Ambar with field research in both Ethiopia and India."--Ned Alpers, University of California, Los Angeles

"In a lively and well-researched narrative Omar H. Ali follows the footsteps of an exceptional man while painting a vivid portrait of a unique and complex society molded by the cultures, languages, and religions of multiple continents. It is a fascinating story of slavery, freedom, power, and transformations."--Sylviane A. Diouf, Director of the Lapidus Center for the Historical Analysis of Transatlantic Slavery and Curator at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of The New York Public Library

"While the story of Malik Ambar's fascinating life is a key to understanding major cultural and political exchanges across the Indian Ocean, it is also the moving and inspiring tale of an African boy who grows up to become an Indian king. This succinct biography by Omar H. Ali allows the reader to plunge into the cosmopolitan world of the Deccan courts, where Abyssinian slaves and noblemen played an important role in political and military affairs. Ambar's talents, which extended from warfare to diplomacy, placed him at the center of events that shaped the seventeenth century. This book adds new perspectives to his early life and to the complex forces that took him across the Indian Ocean, and offers fresh insight into how he found his place in India."--Navina Haidar, Curator, Department of Islamic Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Honestly I bought this book thinking on a BASEBALL Law book, but I was surprised on how interesting it is. It has real legal facts and cases that has happened in baseball. Easy to read (I finished it in one afternoon - watching a game ..)

The Little White Book of Baseball Law is well worth the price. The authors, John H. Minan and Kevin Cole, have blended 226 pages of fascinating legal disputes from baseball's history with an examination of some of the more arcane rules in baseball. This lawyer/reader, as an 11 year old Cleveland Indians fan, without a television, began my love of baseball around the time I "heard" Willie Mays' famous over the head catch in the 1954 World Series. The Little White Book of Baseball Law more than satisfied my 55 year quest to understand everything worthy that America's pastime could brings to our culture. The depth and breadth of The Little White Book of Baseball Law is commendable. The eighteen chapter subjects range from Sammy Sosa's corked bat incident in 2003, to the perjury allegations against Barry Bonds derived from his Grand Jury testimony. There is an explanation of when, why, and if, Media corporations televising Major League Baseball can preempt Major League Baseball games.Virtually every page has a tidbit of information that even the most dedicated fan will appreciate. Perhaps the most interesting literary device in the Book is the "Umpire's Ruling" segment that follows each chapter explaining a pertinent legal issue of the game in concise lay person's terms. What happens when a pitched ball is stuck in the catcher's mask? What are the rules for "balks"? When is a catch a legal "catch"? Who is liable for injuries on and off the field, and on the way to the hospital? What are the merits of metal bats versus wooden bats? The reader will discover that a ball hit by a metal bat will travel at a speed of more than 100 miles per hour (mph) over 40% of time and arrive at the pitchers mound in less than .4 of a second, a shade faster than the average ball hit by a wooden bat, therefore reducing the reaction time of a pitcher finishing up his pitch. The most interesting chapter for me was the concise explanation of the positive impact of Curt Flood's unsuccessful legal battle on the reserve clause in the Federal Courts, which ultimately became the catalyst for the "Curt Flood Act" in which Congress included major league baseball players' "employment" contracts within the protections of the antitrust laws, but did not provide minor league players with the same protection in order to preserve the Minor League farm system. As Tip O'Neil once said "Everything is political". Apparently, even in Baseball. This is a good read!

My wife purchased this book for me as a Birthday Gift and I cannot sum it up any better than stating "Professor Minan hit this one out of the park!". After falling in love with the Professor's first book in this series "The Little Green Book of Golf Law", I couldn't wait to start this one. The sequel surely does not disappoint the baseball purist. I challenge Professor Minan to come up with his next installment in the international realm of "football" -- surely there are great international legal cases that would entertain us from continent to continent! Bravo Professor!
