My 5yo loved, loved learning about Ruby Bridges and her bravery. This book was great, but the picture of the "angry mob" had people of color as the majority, when in reality White people were protesting her presence in the school. I'm not sure why the illustrator and author decided to do that, but it can be confusing to young children. I mean racism, in general, is confusing to young kids, but that just adds to it.I'd also recommend the book "The Youngest Marcher."
Great children's story about an important time in our nation's history and overcoming adversity. While the topic is heavy (segregation), the main character is a very young girl. If she could live through the horrors of being called names only due to the color of her skin and belittled as a first grader and still show kindness to those who tried to oppress her, I felt my 7 year old niece should be able to handle reading it. It is presented very well and in terms children can understand without being scared. It is also a great chance to have a teaching opportunity. We must teach our young people history lest it repeat itself! There is also a very well made and kid friendly movie about the topic that is available on Amazon.
This kids book is well written and is a good way to point out how recently these inequalities occurred. Ruby Bridges started first grade at the same time I did. Her experiences were very different from my privileged start to first grade. As I read this book to all of my grandchildren, I stressed that this did not happen during slavery but much more recently. I made sure the parents of the grandchildren were near by to hear my explanations.
My 7 year old is obsessed with Ruby Bridges. She came home from school spouting all if this information and wanted to know more. I thought this book would be great to have and keep through her teenage and adult years.
I bought this for my 4-year-old granddaughter. While she is too young to fully understand the story, it did open up conversations. She asked why people were so mean to the little girl.
I try to find opportunities to talk to my kindergartner about race in a developmentally appropriate way. This is a great book for that. Only problem is I usually can't make it through without crying :)
This book tells a strong and powerful tale with stunning illustrations. The story is fantastic, and really helps drive home just how brave Ruby was and what a powerful thing she did just by going to school every day.
Read this book to sons 1st grade class in honor of black history month. Kids and teacher loved it and it resonated with the kids because they are her age.
