We as a society and many of us as individuals are not ready for what's coming. In the next 10 years, technology will take over millions of jobs including professional jobs. We humans will be in a frantic footrace to stay relevant. Our answer lies within what makes us unique as humans - our ability to think differently than machines and our ability to engage emotionally with other humans. This new book by Ed Hess is an important contribution in filling the critical gap created by the onslaught of new technology - especially in the area of data science, artificial intelligence, and the integrative machine learning. With considerable experience, field work, and analysis, along with passion and heart, the author makes a compelling case for human intelligence as the factor that separates and distinguishes us from the activities and skills that machines have and/or will take over. This is an outstanding book that explores the future of how human intelligence must change for us to be successful in a world where computers with artificial intelligence can perform much of today's work far better than humans. As an educator and business leader I worry that we are educating our students and employees for a world that will be far different than today and this book provides useful insights and behaviors that will enhance human thinking. These behaviors, although not frequently practiced today, are inherently human like managing our own thinking processes and improving how we collaboratively engage with each other. This is a practical book with diagnostic tools to assess your current state at both the individual and organizational level and provides sound advice based on current science in how to improve. Best of all these behaviors will make us better leaders now, as well as prepare us for the future. The book was easy to read and the authors used many personal examples that make it seem like an engaging conversation. Only rarely do I find a book that is so meaningful and broadly applicable that I order copies to give to my adult children and mentees, and I am already into my second order!
I purchased copies for myself and everyone within my management team along with several friends. The authors are on the forefront of a coming revolution we have been hearing about. This book is a standout and explores ideas and territories that I have not previously seen covered. It is thoughtful, thought provoking, and will cause you to really think about the ramifications for the future. The book is a fast read and the analysis is spot on.
