He was the engineer on the first due apparatus on June 18, 2007 where nine of his fellow firefighters perished in the line of duty. He has a Bachelor of Science in education from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, a Master of Science in executive fire service leadership, and a Doctorate of Education in organizational leadership and development. Griffin is a best-selling author and featured speaker at universities, conferences, and organizations across the globe regarding his research and firsthand experience in organizational learning, leadership, development, change, and employee motivation.
